I think there might actually be a problem with character.asset.xml.

I wanted to get the full grass back so I removed the ground cover lodranges.txt and I started to get the crash that ada0015 was having. I put things back the way they were by replacing the file but I was still getting the crash.

So I brought the game back to vanilla and gradually added the IW2017 files until it crashed again. It was the character.asset.xml that was causing the problem. Without that file everything is running as it should even without the ground cover lod file.

What is strange is that everything was fine until I messed with the ground cover file.

I've been experiencing instability in that with Island War too.   Although it is very off, some runs it will go hours without crashing.
That file is the Soldier LOD fix, and Unfortunately I may have to not include it as a default option for now.

I think the issue is the game is filling up with graphics memory and crashing, so if we can figure out how to increase the memory pools, this issue should go away.

Well from what I understand thus far, its a 32bit game that is only allowed to use about 1.6gb of memory.  Probably the XBOX had this much it could handle at the time.
The game crashes not because the system won't give it more memory, but because the games internal memory pool management won't allow the Windows version to expand its memory pools past a base amount.  If these pools fill, they assert, and with no debug IDE to capture it, the game crashes.

Its one of the things on my plate to look into, but for the moment I am focusing on finishing Island War

I just tried it and it didn't break anything (so far). It's an application for patching 32bit exe and letting them know there's more memory to be had. I just thought that if it worked for Oblivion and Fallout 3 it might work for OFDR.

I also returned the character.asset.xml back in and it has crashed yet. Fingers crossed.

Edit: Nope, the crash came back. Sad

Hi Gage!  I remember you Smile

trust me, he has!   We have been discussing OFDR possibilities for a little bit now actually.

Ive been spending my time lately getting my butt kicked by the AI as I iron out the last logic issues.  Some of the funny things I've been dealing with :
Heli pilots doing low-flybys (as seen in the video)
Heli pilots taking off, then deciding, nah, I don't want to use this chopper anymore. Only to land and decide, screw it, we'll use that chopper just next to us.
Half the invasion force deciding, screw the objective, lets attack this instead

It all works really well, and Im almost never finding code issues now, its just little oddities like these that need fixing before release time!

Anything I can test? Would love to help, tired of how Arma has turned out DR has better Ai then Arma till this day. The only thing for this game that is missing is the ability to mod anything.

I installed the DRK files + exe on the Steam version and don´t see any servers in the LAN section. Is there nobody online atm or did I mess up something?

Strangely enough I have the same problem. Shortly after installing files from DRKs and installing Visual C++ Redistributable otherwise my game wouldn't even start i did see one server i joined it then joined friend's server, then i was kicked out from mission after loading screen. Eventually after this xiuld not even notice single derver in the LAN lobby. I've even opened ports forward according to instructions found on the web. That also didn't work.

So I was at the back end of my 30's when I got back into some gentle gaming and played OFDR on the PS3.

I was evangelical about it when everyone else was tying themselves in knots about COD, Battlefield and ARMA. It's the best balance of all of those and a lot more playable.

Yesterday I stumbled across this development and immediately got me a PC version.

I'm actually genuinely excited and impressed with what's going on with this development - not least because I was right all along!

Gaming time is limited what with work and family but let's see those 13 year olds try and spawn kill me on a proper game.

Good luck and count me in.

Welcome to the forums mate, this has been here since 2012. So its not a new thing. We continued the support for the game when Codemasters didn't.

All the mods are here. I'm not sure which ones still work but I'm pretty sure most of them still do. Its probably only outdated file storage links that don't work more so than the mods themselves.

Enjoy your stay, the game and hopefully you'll enjoy it more now the revival has occured this year.

Awesome stuff Templar. I have been away from the forum for months, only to see your link on Steam.
Time to download....

Edit - I have a GTX 1080/i7 7700k @ 1080p - I installed the Island War 2017 then dropped all the optional mods in (including the cracked 1.02 exe).
Everything starts fine but I am stuck with a 5:3 aspect ratio. If I change it to 16:9 the game crashes. Also If I max the graphic settings (in game), it also crashes.
I am pretty stuck now until someone kindly gives me some assistance.

Hey Man,  thanks for giving it a go!

The aspect ratio 5:3  (which in today's world no one ever uses) has been repurposed to an aspect ratio of 1.9:1 (giving a much greater Field of View than 16:10 or 16:9).  The game only has presets for the UI so I cannot change that it says 5:3 unfortunately.

Did you try using the config file that comes with it?

Alternatively, head to this Article I wrote :

Thanks. Everything makes sense now. The wide aspect does look great but I have been playing in 16:9.

What I found was, any graphic/screen settings I made in game, caused my game to crash. I have to make all my changes in the hardware configuration file then set to 'read only'.
Shadow textures are set to 1024, I presume I can up these to 2048 and higher, as well as other settings in the config file? I know you added a graphical mod but I am not sure if it affects the configuration settings.
Also when in game I was hitting F5 but noticed no change to the lighting etc. Is it subtle or could I have done something wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Hey there!

What resolution are you playing at?  The only time it crashes for me when I change ingame settings is if Im playing in cinematic 1920x817 and forget to turn off full screen (the game just loves switching this on). Obviously that resolution does not exist as a full screen one so it crashes.

You can set Shadows all the way to 4096 and its performance impact is not that great!

Your best best is to take my hardwareconfig file and put your own preference of resolution and aspect into it.  All the settings (apart from shadows) is at its maximum.

Did you follow the instructions on modifying d3d.ini to point to your games install folder?  The different is quite profound and you should have no question it is enabled!
If the ini file is not edited though, it cannot find the effects and so pressing F5 will do nothing.

Thanks Templar, it was d3d.ini file, I had made an error with the path. F5 now works perfectly.
As you advised, I copied all the lines from the cinematic config file but just turned on vsync (100hz), 4mssa and changed the aspect ratio to 1.6666 (1080p).

I am still getting random crashes and when I think I have nailed the reason why, it crashes again. It crashed 100% of the time when I changed to long play and tried to reloaded the previous checkpoint. I then reverted back to quick play and it ran okay until I had another crash within minutes of playing.
I sometimes crash when I die. I sometimes crash when exiting the helo at the start of a game, sometimes I never crash. I really cannot nail this down, there is no consistency to the random crashing.
The hour I played before quitting to eat was absolutely amazing. Since coming back, I cannot play for more than a few minutes.

Post by TemplarGFX Sun 26 Feb 2017, 12:01

OK that's really good news actually.   You seem to be the first person to have tried reloading from the main menu after the stutter!

The stuttering is caused by the game running out of "lua memory pool". This causes the data inside IW2017COMPILED.DAT to not load.  IW checks to ensure this data is loaded, and if not, it loads it. Unfortunately because there's no memory it just keeps trying to load that data file again and again and again.

Quick Play and Long Play only differ in that Quick Play resets IW's Checkpoint file when you start, and Long Play loads it.

I have been struggling with fixing this bug, and if it turns out to be reliable that loading the checkpoint from the menu resolves it, I may abandon a fix (i'm already looking at complex solutions as simple ones have failed).

Thankyou for sharing this information!
