Lower Grass / Terrain Mod Empty Lower Grass / Terrain Mod

Post by Palyarmerc Mon 27 May 2013, 00:30

I did find a post that suggested you could 'turn the grass off'.
Did it all the time in Arma and Delta Force. Didn't want to do it with this game, it ruins the 'look'. But needs must.

Anyone have the solution?

I did see a post somewhere (and quickly lost it) about modifying in the hardware_settings_config.xml - I changed them a bit and have 'less grass', but not total exclusion.

Below is a copy of the post that one of our members TemplarGFX posted a couple of boards ago

Grass getting in your way? remove it!
Alot of people hate the fact that the AI can see through grass while you cant, well now you can remove the grass and even the field Razz

Its actually a simple thing to do, just follow these instructions :

copy the SYSTEM folder from DATA into DATA_WIN

open the hardware_settings_restrictions.xmls file and change the appropriate section to look like this :

Code:
    <ground_cover>
        <restrict_set name="tilesPerLOD" default="24">
            <allowed value="8" />
            <allowed value="24" />
            <allowed value="49" />
            <allowed value="81" />
            <allowed value="122" />
            <allowed value="256" />
        </restrict_set>
        <restrict_float_range name="lodScale" default="1.0" min="0.1" max="15.0" />
    </ground_cover>

then open the config file in My Documents\My Games\OFPDR\hardwaresettings\hardware_settings_con fig.xml

and change the appropriate area to look like this :

Code:
    <coverage tolerance="1.000000" />
    <ground_cover lodScale="15.00000" tilesPerLOD="8" />

there you go, grass is gone! Looks a little crap though.

also, you can go the opposite way and make grass super dense. The problem with this is that it seems the game has a max number of grass entities that game be in the game at any one time, so the more you lower the LOD, the more grass, but closer the grass will stop being drawn.

I find these settings are good for pretty far distance grass

Code:
    <coverage tolerance="0.000000" />
    <ground_cover lodScale="1.20000" tilesPerLOD="256" />

Enjoy

the grass is one of the last and most complex graphic files drawn - they actually look like 2d polys - I imagine the issue was calculating LOS - large bushes and trees have mass which is why you can hide behind

If the stealth module is made, then we will not have to worry about the PLA seeing you before you see them.

AFAIK this will only work if you right click on the file after you save your changes and check the read only attribute. Otherwise the game will overwrite it with defaults.

Thanks John ... the modification cuts the grass down to a reasonable size and looks pretty good too.

a little, but it is the ONLY place that is maintaining the assets, code and user missions of OFDR - losing the gaming lobby really took the wind out of pickup games.

OFDR does one thing really well, reducing the complexities of loadouts and get you in the game quickly with enough commands that don't drive people nuts.

Just modify a file named "data_win\graphics\ground_cover\ground_cover_types.xml":

Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<ground_cover>
  <type name="meadowmed" />
  <type name="woodlandmed" />
  <type name="highmed" />
  <type name="bushmed" />
  <type name="roadside" />
</ground_cover>

Or you can modify the original file for more details.

@runerback

Hi .. I don't have a 'ground cover' folder so how does it work and what does this actually do?

@anyone

Which command line do you change to make the grass become more dense?

btw, this MilSim is so underrated and overlooked.

Thanks

it's not really a milsim. It's not really got a genre in terms of that I don't think.

I'd say it was more a Tactical shooter. That phrase has been used a lot in the past.

I guess tactical shooter is a better term.. although I still find single player missions far more enjoyable than Arma 3.
